Aqua One Phos+Nitrate Pad is a tightly woven chemical filter pad which helps to absorb phosphate (PO4) and nitrate (NO3). High phosphate levels within an aquarium are one of the major food sources for algae. Phosphate builds up over time as a result of too much or poor quality fish food, lack of regular water changes and decaying plant or animal matter. Nitrate can cause kidney, liver and eye problems for fish, as well as suppress their appetite and prevent their gills from absorbing oxygen from the water. Phos+Nitrate Pads do not substitute for good aquarium keeping practices. A Phos+Nitrate Pad should be used as a preventative or treatment: not a cure for prolonged phosphate or nitrate concentrations in an aquarium.
