Description

Introduction Assorted Axolotls are captivating amphibians with a unique appearance. They are known for their feathery gills and salamander-like bodies. With a variety of colors and patterns, they make fascinating additions to aquariums.

Scientific Name Ambystoma mexicanum

Water Quality Axolotls require cold, well-filtered water. The water should be dechlorinated and free of heavy metals.

pH Level The ideal pH level for axolotls is between 6.5 to 8.0.

GH Level A moderate GH level of around 100-150 ppm is suitable for axolotls.

KH Level A KH level of around 50-100 ppm is recommended for maintaining water stability.

Feeding Axolotls are carnivores and should be fed a diet of live or frozen food, such as bloodworms, earthworms, and daphnia. Juveniles should be fed daily, while adults can be fed every other day.

Substrates and Tank Decorations A soft substrate, such as sand or fine gravel, is ideal for axolotls. Smooth rocks and plants can be added for hiding places.

Tankmates If keeping with fish, ensure the fish do not nibble at the Axolotl’s feathery gills, or alternatively be eaten by the Axolotl. (The Axolotl has rather poor eyesight and tends to snap at anything it considers food!) Axolotls also have the amazing ability to regenerate limbs or gills.

Maximum Size and Longevity Axolotls can reach a maximum length of around 30cm. With proper care, they can live for 10-15 years.

Behavior Axolotls are typically nocturnal and spend most of their time hiding. They are curious and can be playful.

Things to Consider Before Buying Axolotls require a dedicated aquarium and regular maintenance. They are sensitive to water quality and temperature changes.

General Information Axolotls are native to Lake Xochimilco in Mexico. They are considered a critically endangered species due to habitat loss and pollution.

A Fun Fact Axolotls can regenerate lost limbs, organs, and even parts of their brains! This incredible ability makes them valuable subjects for scientific research.
