Description
Scientific Name: Scientifically known as Metynnis argenteus, the Silver Dollar belongs to the Characidae family and originates from South America.
Water Quality: Ensuring pristine water conditions is essential for the well-being of your Silver Dollar. Here are the key water parameters:
- Temperature: Keep the water temperature between 72°F and 80°F (23°C to 26°C) to create a comfortable environment.
- pH Level: Maintain the pH level between 6.0 and 7.5 for slightly acidic to neutral conditions.
- GH Level: Aim for a general hardness (GH) of 4 to 10 dGH to ensure essential mineral availability.
- KH Level: Keep the carbonate hardness (KH) between 4 to 8 dKH for pH stability.
Feeding: Silver Dollars are herbivores and primarily feed on plant matter making them voracious eaters of most aquatic vegetation present in their habitat. Offer them a balanced diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and supplement with vegetables like blanched spinach and zucchini.
Tank Mates: Silver Dollars are peaceful and prefer to be kept in groups of six or more. Suitable tank mates include other peaceful community fish like tetras, and rasboras.
Substrates and Tank Decorations: Use fine sand or smooth gravel as the substrate to mimic their natural habitat. Provide plenty of open swimming space and some driftwood or rocks for them to explore.
