Hyphessobrycon colombianus, also known as the blue-red Colombian tetra, is a tropical freshwater fish species belonging to the Characin family. The Colombian redfin tetra is indigenous to the Acandi River, which is located in northwestern Colombia, near Acandí. The Colombian redfin tetra is typically found in slow-moving creeks and tributaries. It is one of the more expensive tetras, having been introduced to the aquarium trade only recently. In general, they will form shoals with other tetra species and will get along well with the majority of aquarium fish.
The Colombian redfin tetra is silver-grey in colour and can grow to a total length of approximately 6.5 cm (2.6 in). It exhibits a turquoise-blue hue that intensifies from the lateral line upward, forming a prominent stripe across the anterior dorsal ridge. The fins are primarily scarlet red; however, the pigment will diminish as the fish rests. The anal fin is typically outlined in black, and the ends of both the dorsal and caudal fins are whitish.
The Colombian Redfin Tetra is a fish that is generally adaptable and resilient, with a lifespan of 3 to 5 years. It consumes a variety of aquarium foods, including flake food, frozen and freeze-dried foods, and tiny live foods.
