Description
The No.4 Holden L34 Torana driven by Bob Forbes and Wayne Negus struggled in qualifying for the 1974 Bathurst 1000 and could only achieve 11th place on the starting grid for the big race.
A multitude of unfortunate events to the front runners during the race assisted the Forbes/Negus L34 Torana to climb from 11th to 2nd including Colin Bond being black-flagged for dropping oil from his very smoky Torana. He later restarted but was no longer a threat. Then Peter Brock, who was miles ahead, blew his motor and was out. At that point, the fourth placed Bob Forbes suddenly found himself in the lead, but he still had to make a pit stop. Twenty laps from the end, John Goss, who had run out of driving time, handed the car over to Kevin Bartlett to finish the race. Twelve laps later the Forbes Torana made its pit stop and Bartlett took the lead, which he kept. Jim Richards and Rod Coppins finished third, five laps down in another Holden Torana SL/R 5000 L34.
The race was the wettest race in the event’s history and became the slowest of all the Bathurst 1000 races to that time.
