Platies are freshwater fish in the genus Xiphophorus, native to Central America and southern Mexico. The two main species are the southern platyfish (Xiphophorus maculatus) and the variatus platy (Xiphophorus variatus), which have been extensively interbred, making most aquarium platies hybrids of both species. They are livebearers, meaning females give birth to live young rather than laying eggs. 

Platies typically grow to 2–3 inches (5–7 cm), with dwarf varieties staying around 1 inch (2.5 cm),. In optimal conditions, they can live 3–5 years. Males have a pointed caudal fin and a gonopodium (a reproductive organ), while females have a fan-shaped anal fin. 

Platies are known for their vibrant colors and patterns, including varieties like Mickey Mouse, Sunburst, Red Wag, Blue, Bumblebee, and Green Lantern. Wild platies are generally drab, but selective breeding has produced a wide range of colors and tail shapes. 

Platies are hardy and suitable for beginners. They thrive in community tanks with other peaceful fish. A tank with clean water, moderate temperature, and low stress is ideal. They are active swimmers and enjoy a well-planted environment. 

Platies are omnivorous, eating flake foods, small live or frozen foods, and plant matter. A varied diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration. 

Platies are prolific breeders, with females giving birth to 20–50 fry at a time, often monthly. They may eat their own young, so providing hiding spaces or separate breeding tanks can improve fry survival. 

Platies are peaceful and compatible with other non-aggressive freshwater fish, making them excellent for community aquariums. They are social and do best in groups. 

Platies are a colorful, easy-to-care-for addition to any freshwater aquarium, offering both visual appeal and engaging behavior for hobbyists of all levels.
