Overview
Platies are freshwater fish in the genus Xiphophorus, native to Central America and southern Mexico. The two main species are the southern platyfish (Xiphophorus maculatus) and the variatus platy (Xiphophorus variatus), which have been extensively interbred, making most aquarium platies hybrids of both species. They are livebearers, meaning females give birth to live young rather than laying eggs.

Platies typically grow to 2–3 inches (5–7 cm), with dwarf varieties staying around 1 inch (2.5 cm),. In optimal conditions, they can live 3–5 years. Males have a pointed caudal fin and a gonopodium (a reproductive organ), while females have a fan-shaped anal fin.
