Known for their unique looks and hardy nature, these tetras bring elegance and charm to any freshwater aquarium. Originally found in the rivers of South America, particularly in Paraguay and Brazil, the Black Widow Tetra, also known as the Black Skirt Tetra or Black Tetra, is a freshwater fish. They belong to the Characin family, which includes other popular tetras like the Neon and Cardinal Tetras. These fish are well-loved for their beautiful, flowing fins and striking, monochromatic appearance. They grow to about 5–6 cm and can live up to 5 years if well cared for.
Their bodies are typically silver, adorned with two bold, black vertical bands. Their namesake “widow” or “skirt” comes from the distinctive dark and almost translucent fins that resemble a flowing skirt.
They are generally hardy and adaptable, making them suitable for both beginner and experienced aquarists. Black Widow Tetras are peaceful and make a wonderful addition to community tanks.
Black Widow Tetras come from heavily vegetated river environments, so adding plants is a beneficial way to mimic their natural habitat.
- Substitute: Dark sand or gravel helps bring out their colours.
- Filtration: Black Widow Tetras appreciate a moderate flow. A filter that maintains excellent water quality and provides gentle water movement is ideal.
- Lighting: Moderate lighting will accentuate their colours while maintaining a calm environment in the tank.
- They thrive on a balanced diet. High-quality flakes or small granules are ideal. Frozen or live foods, like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia, once or twice a week can boost their health and colour.
