Alfalfa, also known as lucerne, is a perennial flowering plant in the pea family Fabaceae. Alfalfa is an important forage crop worldwide and has a rich history. It has been cultivated as livestock fodder since at least the era of the ancient Greeks and Romans.

While the name alfalfa is used in North America, lucerne is the more commonly used name in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Alfalfa is rich in chlorophyll, carotene, protein, calcium and other minerals, vitamins in the B group, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, and vitamin K. Alfalfa Hay is a high-fibre hay with high protein and high calcium ratios. While perfect for young or lactating animals, adults should only be offered Alfalfa hay as a treat from time to time due to its high calcium content.
